The New York City Ballet has prepared multiple showcases for ballet enthusiasts. For instance, NYCB opened their 75th anniversary season with Jewels. The show is a three-act masterpiece premiered by the company in 1967. New York City Ballet founder and choreographer George Balanchine created this ballet as an abstract presentation that displays incredible jewel-colored costumes. The production brought in all the stops. The original performance brought in Oscar-winning costume designer Barbara Karska, who designed incredibly intricate and jewel-inspired costumes. Each act represents a certain gem – Emeralds, Rubies, and Diamonds. The painstaking work of Karinska resulted in durable and danceable masterpieces that complement the bodies and respect the dancers’ movements. A “classic” classical ballet indeed, Jewels features the remarkable music of legendary composers Gabrial Faure, Igor Stravinsky, and Pyotr Lyickj Tchaikovsky.

After the grand revival’s culmination of George Balanchine’s work, NYCB will welcome the holiday season with the ultimate Christmas epic, The Nutcracker.
